Pear is a very gentle and soft perfume note. It’s very fruity, but also feels quite floral. The scent of pear is often used in combination with other fruity and floral notes, such as apple, peach, rose and jasmine, to create a fresh and delicate aroma. It is also employed to add a sweetness and freshness to perfumes. Fragrances with a pear note tend to be light and flirty. They invite the wearer to enjoy the here and now, forget the worries and celebrate happiness.
As no commercially viable essential oil or fragrant extract can be obtained from fruit directly, pear aspects are created by using lab-derived molecules, especially ethyl decanoate (also called pear ester), which occurs naturally in apple, bartlett pear, concord grape, beer, pear brandy and quince. It has a fruity, sweet, and slightly floral smell, similar to that of fresh apples, pineapples and pears with slightly floral and tropical undertones.
Ethyl decanoate can be produced through chemical synthesis using various starting materials such as decanoic acid and ethanol. The synthesis involves a chemical reaction between the acid and alcohol to produce the ester compound. It can also be obtained as a byproduct of some natural fermentation processes, such as the fermentation of fruits like apricot, but this is not the common source.
