Zara perfumes. A controversial topic. Ever since its successful collaboration with Jo Malone (the perfumer, not the brand), Zara has discovered just how much extra money it can make by offering affordable fragrances with trendy notes that actually smell good.
The Spanish fast-fashion giant is releasing several dozens of fragrances a year, both for women’s and men’s sections. The majority of the scents are as easy to wear as they are forgettable. Some are considered to be dupes for the popular luxury and even niche perfumes. And the most interesting ones proudly carry the names of their perfumers on the label.
The list of noses who have worked for Zara is impressive and is growing bigger every year – Jo Malone, Alberto Morillas, Frank Voelkl, Nathalie Lorson, Fabrice Pellegrin, Jordi Fernรกndez, Hamid Merati-Kashani, Benoist Lapouza, Carlos Benaim, Jรฉrรดme Epinette, and Sonia Constant do not shy away from associating their names with the fashion discounter.
Interestingly, some of them even go as far as creating Zara scents that closely resemble popular works of their colleagues. Seems the Ancient Romans got it wrong when coining the phrase “Pecunia non olet” (money doesn’t smell). Money at Zara does have a smell, and a quite pleasant one too.
This has earned the fashion chain the reputation of being a top destination for affordable alternatives (e.g. copies) of famous and more expensive fragrances. Nevertheless, some of Zara releases follow their own path and smell great without imitating anybody else. So much so that we’ll be covering them here.
