Maitre Jardinier (Master Gardener) is the latest perfume from the niche fragrance house Extrait d’Atelier, created by the perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. This scent is the embodiment of the color green and works amazing whenever you want to experience the shady coolness of the plant kingdom. Curious? Read more below!

The brief that the founder and creative director of Extrait d’Atelier Chiara Ronzani gave to the perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour for Maรฎtre Jardinier could have consisted of just one word: green. Because the resulting fragrance smells unmistakably and almost exclusively GREEN!
Imagine deep green foliage, pine & fir needles illuminated by rays of sunshine, sprinkled with citrus sparks and supported by the vertical backbone of incense. Inside this cocktail of greenery, there is a rather unusual note of laurel leaves that is rarely used in perfumery. Its strong, leathery, camphorous, herby character probably makes it difficult to work with, yet here it fits perfectly, giving the composition an additional dimension without being too prominent.

It’s like a breath of cold forest air on a hot summer day. The intense, tart greenery that has been put into this perfume bottle is not simply refreshing. The coniferous heart of Maitre Jardinier works like an AC unit on steroids, instantly delivering a blast of cool air. The hotter the day, the more pronounced the effect.
In mild weather I can feel more citruses that give way to intense and almost bitter greenery of dense leaves, twigs and tree bark when the temperatures climb above 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit). How does it make me feel? Like Iโve jumped into a glacier lake deep inside a huge, pristine forest. Itโs perfect!
Name-to-scent fit is 100%. All Extrait dโAtelier perfumes are dedicated to masters of their profession, and Master Gardener is no exception. He rules the Green Labyrinth. The scents of leaves, needles, branches and tree resins are etched into every bit of his skin. Somebody who lives for his craft.
This is not your run-of-the-mill green freshie. Maitre Jardinier has a commanding character, strong projection and significant longevity. A perfume that, I feel, needs to be worn intentionally and doesn’t work as a default scent you can mindlessly grab while getting out of the shower.

Like all niche fragrances that are worthy of the word, Master Gardener is a perfume with a big personality. Before you buy it, try it first to find out if yours is a match. If it is – this can become your signature scent.
In my opinion, this is an example of a powerful green that has been taken all the way. A proud candidate for a niche fragrance collection and a bold statement by the brand and the perfumer. And I love it! Itโs strong, elegant, and unique. Perfume as wearable art.
The concept of Extrait d’Atelier, their exploration of links between skilled and experienced hands, materials and senses allow for a lot of creative experimentation, and I’m sure it’s going to be a fertile ground for many more releases. So far, their lineup doesnโt have a single weak position. Masters Couturier, Chausseur, Joallier and Ceramiste are all artistic masterpieces that should be on your list of fragrances to try. As for me, I’m already curious to see what profession they will feature next.

The best place to shop for Extrait d’Atelier scents is their website where you can buy any size from a 2 ml sample, a 10 ml travel spray to a full 100 ml bottle. The brand is also present in many concept and perfume stores internationally, you can find the list of their partner retailers, both on- and off-line, here.
