A recent addition to the perfume collection that I am totally in love with – Parisian Musc from Matiere Premiere, a perfume house founded by master perfumer Aurelien Guichard. Want to experience what life of effortless luxury smells like? Then read on to learn the details in the review!
I‘ve only had Parisian Musc for a couple of weeks, but am totally crazy about it. Why all the excitement? Because this is what carefree, happy, sunny life smells like! The year has been nuts and I don’t know about you, but I’m yearning for 2021 and a fresh start. And this is the perfume that personifies it!

The brand Matiere Premiere has been created by Aurelien Guichard to freely express his passion for exceptional fragrance raw materials. All those beautiful flowers, woods and resins he learned to love during his career that he wanted to interpret without the restrictions of clients’ briefs or budget constrains. The line currently has seven perfumes dedicated to rose (Matiere Premiere grow their own roses to be used for it!), sandalwood, orange blossom, incense, wood and citruses. And while all the fragrances are beautiful, it’s Parisian Musc centered around ambrette seeds from Peru that I cannot get enough of!
The thing about modern musks is that they can be everything and nothing at the same time – they smell utterly familiar, like you know what it is and the word is right there at the tip of your tongue, but for some reason you can’t catch it. They remind you of things, yet they don’t smell quite like anything in particular.
And herein lies their beauty – light and sparkly as fairy dust, they are modern abstractions that delight the senses and let the imagination roam free, while keeping the mind entertained.
Aurelien Guichard’s brand is focused on making the best materials shine in all their glory. In Parisian Musc the warm soft ambrette seed is paired with a bouquet of other materials to highlight its different aspects. The woodiness is amplified by cedar. Ambrettolide & ambroxan are deepening the musky side. And that’s all as far as the official description is concerned. But there must be other molecules involved too, because the result is multifaceted like a diamond.
Close your eyes and inhale, and you’ll be able to make out pretty light florals, warm creamy nuts, powdery undertones, green and even fruity interludes. All of this is united by the overarching theme of clean cozy and relaxed attitude.
The experience is like waking up between the still fresh and crisp white Egyptian cotton sheets of a luxurious hotel in the middle of Paris. That feeling of the perfect relaxed morning, everything is taken care of, the sky is clear, the sun is bright, Eiffel Tower is within reach, life is good (
and you are Emily in Paris).
I miss travelling a lot. Even one night in a nice hotel always feels like a little vacation and 2020 has been very disappointing to say the least when it comes to opportunities for changing the scenery. Parisian Musc brightens up the days with its lightness reminiscent of being somewhere else, happy and carefree. Only exceptional perfumes can make you feel so good!
Normally, I’m not into musk fragrances, because they are often too office friendly and politically correct, lacking character. This one, however, is perfection. It both has universal appeal and is capable to set the mood, or rather reset whatever worries one might be having.
By the way, it’s also a perfect gift for someone else if you are unsure what perfume to choose, can’t go wrong with this one!
The best destination to purchase Matiere Premiere fragrances is of course the official website. It’s super convenient that one can buy a small 6 ml mini or a whole mini set before committing to a full bottle. If you prefer to shop somewhere else, then one can find the brand in luxury department stores such as Harrods, Galeries Lafayette or TSUM, as well as in the Dutch shop skins.nl, Australian libertineparfumerie.com.au and Ounass in the Middle East.
