What is amber in perfumes?
In the world of perfume, amber is not to be confused with ambergris (a byproduct of whale metabolism found on beaches) or fossilized amber. The latter is pretty useless for fragrances because it burns off completely when heated, and there is no feasible way to turn it into a scent raw material. And in case you are curious what it smells like when burned, keep in mind that it’s a fossilized resin from ancient coniferous trees. So its scent is similar to that of pine or fir sap.
When mentioned in a fragrance context, amber stands for one of the oldest classic accords of perfumery (it’s not a single note, but a mix of several ingredients). It is traditionally made up of vanilla, myrrh, opoponax, labdanum and frankincense.
